Lagonegro – Rotonda Ciclovia (Cycle route): a slow journey through tunnels, peaks and silence

Ciclovia Lagonegro - Rotonda

There’s a hidden side of Italy that you can’t experience by car, nor glimpse from the window of a high-speed train.

It’s an Italy made of forgotten trails, old railway tracks, villages clinging to mountain slopes, and dirt roads that whisper stories.

The Ciclovia Lagonegro – Rotonda is one of those stories: a hiking and cycling path winding through Basilicata and Calabria, following the remnants of a disused railway line now reborn as a path for cyclists and walkers in search of raw beauty.

From the silence of an abandoned station

The journey begins in Lagonegro, perched at 906 meters above sea level. Once a railway hub, it’s now a gateway to stillness.

As soon as you step onto the old railway track, the rhythm changes.

You enter a suspended world, far removed from traffic, haste, and intrusive noise.

The cycle route runs roughly parallel to the provincial road but drifts away just enough to offer tranquility, cutting through cool, damp tunnels, aerial bridges, and postcard-perfect glimpses of hilltop towns.

The surface is often smooth — a well-packed white gravel road.

In some stretches, you can still see the geometry of the old rails, even if now the train has become a bicycle, the pace is slow, and the eyes are eager.

It’s an uphill journey — both physically and mentally — reaching an altitude of 1,432 meters as it crosses the Valico dei Cerri, a scenic pass and natural junction between valleys and microclimates.

Lake Sirino and the tunnels of time

Beyond the pass, your gaze opens onto Lake Sirino, a natural mirror of water nestled among the mountains.

It’s a moment of visual suspension, an unexpected postcard.

Then come the tunnels: carved into the rock, some short, others long and winding, cold, dark, and eerily silent.

It feels like moving through time itself, stepping from one dimension into another.

The tunnels lead to Pecorone, a tiny hamlet in the municipality of Lauria, home to just 280 residents, with low houses and a slow, steady rhythm.

The railway disappears here for a few hundred meters, swallowed by modern asphalt.

But the track is soon found again, heading downhill: a quick, exhilarating, almost liberating stretch.

Less than an hour from Rotonda, Tenuta Terre di Bosco is the perfect stop you are looking for!

Lauria and the suspended viaduct

At the outskirts of Lauria, the route is abruptly interrupted by a crumbling viaduct — a stark reminder of a past that can no longer be walked.

This is where you must detour onto SP19, the provincial road through Calabria.

The landscape changes: vegetation thins out, the scenery grows harsher, yet still enthralling.

You enter a land of passage, where every curve tells a tale, every hairpin bend invites reflection.

After about six kilometers, you can rejoin the cycle path.

A short detour through the Monegaldo hamlet lets you bypass traffic, passing through the tiny village and climbing up a secondary paved road.

Here, solitude returns as your travel companion, and the scenery rewards your effort with breathtaking views.

Toward to Rotonda, across invisible borders

The route continues across the border between Basilicata and Calabria — not a hard line but a gentle shift, a gradient.

You rise to 860 meters in elevation before slowly descending toward Laino Borgo, gateway to the Pollino National Park.

The destination is Rotonda, a small town at the foot of the Pollino massif, where nature becomes grand and imposing.

If you decide to go further, as far as Castrovillari, the route stretches to a total of 85 km, becoming a true cross-border journey through two regions united by mountains and history.

A journey for those seeking something more

The Ciclovia Lagonegro – Rotonda is for those with stamina, sure — but above all, for those with eyes and time.

It’s not a route for performance-seekers: it’s for those who want to slow down.

The elevation gain (+975 m) demands a moderate level of fitness but is manageable, especially if split over two days.

Its difficulty level is rated EE (for experienced hikers), mainly due to its length and the solitude of certain stretches.

But the real “challenge” is mental: to let go, to stop needing everything immediately, to discover what it means to ride or walk where once trains and commuters passed — now reclaimed by the sounds of nature.

After the effort, the wonder

Getting here is easy — relaxing even easier: come discover the most authentic side of Cilento, through cycling, flavors, and wide-open horizons.

Why take the Ciclovia Lagonegro – Rotonda?

→ Because it transports you somewhere else without taking you far.
→ Because it links two beautiful yet often overlooked regions.
→ Because it’s wild — yet accessible.
→ Because there’s still time to rediscover places where landscape, community, and history breathe in unison.
